Students with an interest participate in the Sickles High School Jazz Program through auditions with the Director. Jazz is an elective class; all forms of jazz and time periods are studied and performed. In 2019, due to growing interest and talent, the Sickles Jazz Program has increased to over 40 students in two performing ensembles.
In addition to performing at school concerts and in the local community, the Jazz Ensemble participates in a music performance assessment (MPA) at the District and state level. For smaller community venues, there is a Jazz Combo that performs. Performance dress for student musicians consists of all black; black shirt, socks, pants, belts, shoes, and a green uniform tie provided by the school. There is also a green Jazz Polo worn for outdoor venues; purchased through the class fee.
In 2018, the SHS Jazz Ensemble had the honor of playing in Jackson Square, New Orleans and for the Hillsborough County School Board. In 2019, they were thrilled to play the iconic Daytona Beach Bandstand. Always a treat to hear, and with a strong student and community following, the Jazz Ensemble has also played the holiday stage at Chick fil A on Waters Avenue, Tampa, the Citrus Park Mall, Arbor Terrace ALF, and more.
